“Hawaiian Civic Clubs Close Convention; Konan Reelected State President”

Myron “Pinky” Thompson was named the “Outstanding Hawaiian” for the State of Hawaii at the 11th annual Convention of the State Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs held over the weekend. Pilipo Springer of the Kona Hawaiian Civic Club was unanimously reelected to serve as president for another year.

The City of Refuge was turned back to the days of old Hawaii last Saturday when the dedication of the Hale O Keawe took place before some 1,500 people. Hale O Keawe was restored by the National Park Service in the exact same site the original temple stood for centuries and gave religious protection to refugees in the adjacent place-of-refuge.
The oki ka piko began with a ceremonial walk along the water’s edge to the Hale O Keawe where representatives of the Associating of Hawaiian Civic Clubs presented hookupus to the alter. Pilipo Springer, state president of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs, wielded the stone adze used to cut the tuft of thatch, a ceremony symbolizing the birth of the temple.

The skyrocketing increase in real estate activity throughout West Hawaii in the past year has resulted in the creation of a second Big Island Board of Realtors. The new board, made up exclusively of West Hawaii brokers, comprises nine members representing the Kohala, North Kona, South Kona and Ka’u districts.
